Once upon a time there was a big socialist factory area called Joint Factory 718, near the Dashanzi neighbourhood and transportation links. One of the smaller units within this complex was the 798 Factory, which made electronics. As this factory complex was abandoned, artists moved in and the name 798 came to refer to the entire greater area. It's now a thriving area of art galleries, cafés, restaurants, and chintzy tourist trinket shops. I had made it to a small part of this area in 2006 when 798 was a much smaller and less popular area, but I've been hearing how awesome it had become and had been meaning to head out there for a while. Finally, on a pretty nice spring day today, I hopped the bus and made it back out there again. It's absolutely massive, and one day isn't really enough to see all of it. There are art galleries and expositions all over the place, and always somewhere to sit down and have a nice cup of coffee. In true Chinese fashion, the number of tacky trinket shops and the like has also exploded, but everything is still quite tame and reasonable, and it's a great way to walk around and spend a day. |
As you walk in, there are immediately lots of galleries, and you get a feel of a very nice modernised industrial area.
Of course, there's lots (and lots) of extremely odd art.
This first gallery, 热都 - 像 was actually one of the better ones of the day. In particular, the works by 石巍.
Freaky, but compelling.
They started getting a little ... um ... yellow as time went on.
A lot of the galleries were crabby and didn't allow photography, but that didn't stop me having a good time.
More weird stuff.
I'm not sure if this is art or just something cheesy somebody left lying around.
Never forget that this is an old factory area.
Lilacs are in full bloom now and smell absolutely fantastic. Walking around the city is amazing, as they're everywhere.
Lots of rich people standing around being pretentious and all. Good fun, good fun.
More bizarre art.
There is a lot of colourful graffiti everywhere.
Rawr!
This gallery had an adorable well-adjusted cat inside. And some good art too.
Everybody had to get in on the sculpture fun.
Aiya!
I thought this was a gallery. It's a restaurant/café.
Industrial piping everywhere!
And weird modeling projects.
The area is huge, with allies and walkways everywhere.
And lots of art, of course.
I believe most of it is for sale.
More modeling fun.
Shops selling stuff.
Did I mention the great graffiti?
This exhibition was pretty wild — it was on the battle of the sexes, and had weird sexual and aggressive overtones everywhere.
This girl thought giant tubby neuter warrior was adorable.
Here he (it?) is again sans girl.
And the flag he's holding.
These are everywhere.
Rawr!
On one of the larger street, home to many of the cafés and restaurants.
Including this surprisingly okay place with italian coffee.
Hey, it's the chairman, on a giant sculpture of the 100 RMB Chinese bank note.
This was cool. An entire wall of this.
Oooh, more abstract colourful art. Oh no, wait, just a slushie machine.
This was some Sichuan earthquake relief art project.
This store was FREAKY. Inside was nothing but posed stuffed dead animals.
Awesome graffiti.
为人民服务 means "Serve the People", and is the most famous of the slogans from the Cultural Revolution. Or "Serves for the People" if you speak only Chinglish.
This place was freaky/awesome.
Inside was wall upon wall of text saying We killed people, we killed men, we killed women, we killed old people, we killed children, we beat people, we beat people's faces.
We ate people, we ate brains, we ate faces, etc.
We will go to heaven.
In addition, there were these TVs everywhere with blue cloudy skies.
Just bizarre, but totally cool.
More unusual modeling projects.
I have this as a wallpaper on my computer somewhere. What's it doing here in a furniture store in Beijing?
Never forget that this is a huge old factory area.
With wonderful public toilets!
It was right about now that the weather started to deteriorate pretty bad. A huge wind storm rolled in, and with the dust and pollen, it became difficult to walk or see anything.
So, time to catch a bus and head home. Nice day. Will definitely come back!
