| A Week on Hainan Island | |

2006-05-01
At the beginning of May here in China is Labour Day. Somehow, it came to be three days, so the first three business days of May are Labour Day. But then, pretty much everybody decided to just take two more days and make it a five day, week long hollyday. So, the first WEEK of May is Labour Day, the country pretty much shuts down, and everybdoy goes on holidays to visit family or whatever. We decided to head down to Hainan Island, one of the few swanky beach-resort type places in China. It's pretty pricey, even by Western standards, but supposedly nice. The Island is, indeed, quite pretty, although hotter than butt. Our first day, just standing around in the shade was a miserably humid experience. You spend most of your time running from cover to cover, and hopping into the pool as much as possible. The only downside to the Island is that there's not really much to do. Hainan is quite large, and there are some sights to see in the hills in the middle, but that's about it. Most of the rest of the time is spent on the beach relaxing. Which isn't such a bad thing. |

We decided to stay at the Marriott down here, which is wedged in the Yaolong Bay resort development area. Quite nice.

All those red-roofed buildings are massage spas, which is great if you're feeling a bit tense.

The pool area was pretty monstrous, which plenty of places to sit and one of the largest swimming pools I've ever seen.

It was about here that our nice and cool camera started to figure out that it was 10000 degrees outside and started condensing water on the lens. Crap! Not very good for the camera.
