A couple of days in Qingdao

We decided it would be fun to take a couple of days to go see some other city in China, not too far from Beijing. Unfortunately, we couldn't find train tickets for many of the more interesting places, so we went to Qingdao, which has the advantage of being not so far away from here.

Qingdao is a city. It has 4 million people, and some buildings, and hotels, and restaurants. It's an old German colonial era town, which has some buildings that still bear some of that heritage (such as the brewery for the world famous Tsingtao beer), but for the most part, it's just another regular Chinese city. It does have some very good seafood resetaurants, if you're culinarily inclined.

The Train ride to Qingdao
This was my first train ride in China, and it was pretty harmless. Four hours on a pretty modern Chinese train, with speeds of about 210kph for maybe half the trip, and about 150kph for the rest. Comfortable and convenient.

Our first meal in Qingdao, involving lots of seafood and bright flashing lights!

Exploring the City
We pretty much spent the entire day today from 9am until 5pm walking around and exploring some of the more interesting sights in the city, including the waterfront, some military museums, and some aquariums. We then rested and went out for dinner and I lost my wallet. D'oh!

Visiting Laoshan before heading home
We were to catch a train back to Beijing in the evening, but first we went and visited Laoshan, a huge natural park just outside of the city. We took a bus both ways, which, while cheap, was extremely slow. We got to see a lot of the city though, and the park at the end was really nice.
