| A few days in New York City | |
2008-07-18
My friend Zoltan recently moved to New York City to do some work for a startup there. He's got a nice pad in a great location, and I had a few free days to hang out in the city, so I went a-visiting. We decided to check out some places that neither of us had been to before, and met up with some of his friends for dinner. We started out at the Empire State Building, which has a pretty ridiculous line-up to get in -- but you're constantly moving from waiting area to waiting area, so you're never really that aware that it's taking about 2.5 hours to get to the top. Next we went to the Guggenheim Museum, and finally finished off by doing some wandering around Central Park, checking out some grass areas and the like that I had never seen before. Overall, a nice way to spend a day. |
The July weather was pretty brutally hot, but we toughed it out and started wandering around the city streets, working our ways towards the Empire State Building.
Tourists abound aplenty.
Okay, we've cleared the first 90 minutes of waiting in line and are now waiting in line for ... the first (of two) elevators to the top. It's complicated.
There's not much else to do here but take photos.
Finally, you get to the top, where there's a nice air conditioned waiting area thingie.
Turns out the wait is entirely worth it. The views from up top are pretty awesome.
I started out facing east towards ... uh ... the East River.
It's crappy homemade panorama time! Awww yaaaah!
It's weird being -above- everything in this city. Normally, you spend all your time looking up.
I think that's the UN building there right before the river.
There are apartments all over the place here, and still not enough places to live in the city.
Looking south towards the tip of the city.
Uuuuh. Trying weird things with my camera. Who knows.
That's Jersey City down there across the river, I think.
Tonnes of taxis out and about.
Looking more or less straight down from the building. Eeek!
More Eeek!
It's pretty crowded up here, but the wind makes it comfortable.
Zoltan's building is in there somewhere but it was hidden behind some other place.
Okay, looking north now.
It's crappy homemade panorama time! Awww yaaaah!
That's Central Park up there, it's pretty big.
Bryant Park, I believe.
Cool building.
People photo time.
Big Z...
... and myself.
Back on the street, we worked our up up north.
The Upper East Side apparently is a dangerous place to live.
It's a pretty neighbourhood tho'.
Inside the Gugggenheim. It's an interesting design. You spiral your way up, and then slowly work your way down, checking out the exhibits.
They don't allow photogramaphy inside, and a few big exhibits were closed, but we still spent a cool coupla hours checking things out.
Seeing as the Guggenheim is right next door, after we left the museum, we worked our way through Central Park. Funny how I've never noticed the monstrous-ass reservoir here before ...
Lots of people jogging, despite the heat.
There are a few huge fields here, with people playing all sorts of sports. Looks like a great place to do some yoga!!
Or get a dog (hot, that is).
There are even some "wild" areas left in the park. They're about 50m long.
Wanna rent a boat? They've got that.
Fountain time.
Eeeek. Sometimes spontaneous photos are not good.
Zoltan's going to kill me if he ever sees this photo.
Some Taiwanese girl strikin' a pose!
We ended up coming back to the park the next morning for some yoga (me) and jogging (Zoltan). Great way to spend a Sunday AM.
Finally, some views from Zoltan's building. His is pretty tall -- about 45 floors. The one across the road is about 20-25 stories taller. Eeek!
That's quite the fall!!
A super cool thunderstorm rolled in later in the afternoon.

Nice weekend. Next stop, a week in a car in New England with my sister.
