  A few days in Singapore

With the expiration of my Chinese visa at the end of June, and a general antsiness that I hadn't felt in a while, I decided to do a little traveling abroad for a few months. With the Asia Yoga Conference in Hong Kong not starting until about the 5th of July, I had some time to kill before heading to that city. I decided it would be nice to finally see some of Singapore.

The city immediately strikes you with how clean it is, and the air is gloriously unpolluted. The city is a reasonably small island nation (not quite as big as Hong Kong), and doesn't have a lot of domestic industry beyond banking and financial services.

The downside to this is that the city is unbelievably hot and muggy. I mean, 35C and 95% humidity every single day. Your basic rule of thumb: never go outdoors. Ever. If you have to, run to the next air conditioned place as quickly as humanly possible. Even in the evening when I went out to meet some friends once, they were wearing tank tops and swim trunks, basically, and we were still all sweating like pigs.

But there's lots of nice stuff to see in the city, great food, some good shopping, and a zoo that isn't depressing or creepy.

Chinatown and Environs
My hotel is in Chinatown here in Singapore, and my usual plan of action in any city is to just get up, get the camera, a map, and start walking around. This is not a good idea in this city, and I ended up going shopping for less thick clothing after a few hours.

Harbourfront and Mount Faber Park
I decided to take the subway down to the Harbourfront area today, and then go check out Mount Faber Park. It was pretty hot out still, but there was lots of beautiful stuff to see. I ended up buying a shirt after walking through the park just so I could swap out the sweat-soaked one I was wearing previously.

The Singapore Zoo and Clarke Quay
I went to the Singapore Zoo today, and then finished off with some dinner near Clarke Quay. I can honestly say I've never seen a zoo with this many happy looking animals.
