| A week in New England with my sister | |
| My sister had a week's vacation time coming to her and a serious need for not being in Seattle, so we decided to take a vacation together. We talked about various possible locations and places to go, but given that I was going to be in New York a lot, we figured to take advantage of the opportunity to see some of New England, a generally pleasant place with lots of beautiful towns and countryside. Sadly, one week doesn't turn out to be much time to see this place, so we ended up just focusing our efforts on Maine, which worked out well, as the place is simply beautiful. On our way, we drove through the Berkshires in western Massachusetts, but basically had no time for either Vermont or New Hampshire. Next time! |

The Berkshires, Western Massachusetts
| I picked up my sister and the rental car at JFK, and then we started driving, with the goal of just getting out of the city and into Massachusetts by sundown. We drove along some pleasant roads through nice western Connecticut countryside, before ending up in southwestern Massachusetts, in the town of Great Barrington. |

Arriving in Kennebunkport
| There are a few places on the coast of Maine that are supposed to be interesting, so we choose the middle-most one, Kennebunkport. We were hoping that it would be nice and "charming" (what's the point of going B&B'ing if it's not charming?) and would also provide us with some good fun. Win on all counts! |

Bicycling around Kennebunkport and environs
| Our first full day in Kennebunkport involved us renting some bicycles and taking them around for a long ride. The weather held out just long enough for us to get in a good 20 miles or so, and see a lot of the surrounding areas and towns. |

Kayaking in Maine
| Given the horrible weather engulfing all of New England, we decided to spend one last day in Kennebunkport before heading up north to Bar Harbour. We rented a canoe and got in a few good hours of paddling between torrential downpours. Then the weather got crappy again, so we just hung out and read books. |

Working our way up to Bar Harbour
| We've heard nothing but great things about Bar Harbour and Acadia National park up more north and east in Maine, so we decided to spend a while up there hiking and otherwise exploring there. We took the slow road there and saw some nice places along the way. |

Bar Island and Hiking through Acadia
| Some helpful park ranger dude suggested that our best bets for outdoor fun would be to visit Bar Island early ("early" being 9am) in the morning and then heading to do some hiking on the south of the Island later. We'd explore the town of Bar Harbour proper later in the day. |

Wandering around Bar Harbour
| As the day grew long and we came back from our hiking adventures, we decided to spend a little bit of time wandering around the town of Bar Harbour proper, which is quite nice and full of souvenir shops and surprisingly good restaurants. |
