An Imperial Meal at the Summer Palace

2009-07-25

A friend of mine was invited to a birthday party for a friend's dad, and was told that she should bring a friend. I was sufficiently high in the chain of people she wanted to invite that I made it in!

The meal was an "Imperial Style" meal at the Summer Palace, and consisted of tonnes of small courses with different types of soups, meats, fish, and vegetables.

Everybody there was from Jiangsu province and spoke mostly dialect, so my understandings of the goings on were limited, but I was able to practice talking some, and managed to have lots of time to focus on the eating!

Working our way in the Summer Palace.
It was a hotty out today, and the Chinese ladies are big on the sunbrellas.
Okay, I will be most delighted to make a detour!
I've been here a couple of times before, so I'll skip on describing the whole palace thing again.
Here's a panorama of the restaurant area.
The restaurant is a big courtyard type building, with individual dining rooms for everybody to have their meals.
Everybody starting to sit down, with the birthday boy getting seated first.
Having 2-4 young girls in qi paos fawning over you for 2 hours probably isn't such a bad way to spend your birthday.
The setup is quite elabourite.
You have to choose the appropriate glass for the appropriate beverage.
Oddly enough, I understood these old ladies best of nearly everybody at the table. Who'da thunk it?
First order of business — beverages.
This takes longer than you'd think.
But one guy brought a very strong Baijiu. The Chinese love making foreigners drink it and laughing as their faces scrunch up. I obliged.
The restaurant is very proud of its shrimp/vegetable art. It is pretty cool.
Can it be eat time now please?
Yes! Dishes!
And yummy they were!!
The serving ware was really nice.
*burp*
The food kept coming until nobody could manage to eat any more, as is Chinese-style.
Okay, we took the long way back to the bus stop.
A video of the main little pavillion at the entrance to this restaurant.
Core family portrait time.
Well, with some horsing around first.
Man, it must be hot in there.
"HOLY CRAP IT'S A BLACK PERSON! QUICK GO GET OUR PHOTO WITH THEM!!!!"
You can rent these paddleboats, and it's a nice way to spend an afternoon.
Holy hordes, Batman!
Finally outside, working our way over to the bus stop.
It's an absolute sauna out today. Hot and muggy.
A nice Saturday afternoon.
