An afternoon Sailing trip in Puget Sound

2009-08-29

The plan was to go for a sail around Puget Sound today. But in the AM, the weather dawned super dark and cloudy and rainy. But the weather people said "It'll be nice", so we decided to go anyway. By the time we got to the boat later on, it was gorgeous and sunny and warm out. An even better stroke of luck had there being absolutely zero wind all day. As a complete land-lubber who gets seasick just looking at the ocean, I was thrilled about this, as it meant we would for sure have a nice calm afternoon ride.

Some friends of Susan's piloted the ship and took us around for a lovely spin, and we otherwise just sat around chatting, munching on snacks, and relaxing in the sun. Very nice.

Autumn colours are coming in a bit early this year in Seattle. It's gorgeous already.
I guess Seattle has become a bit of a cruise ship port lately, with three big ships going up to Alaska every Saturday.
Not being a member of the rich swanky marina, I had to park in California and walk the rest of the way.
Can't afford a 200k USD boat? Buy a kayak instead. Much cheaper!
The calm winds made for glassy water.
And so we set out.
An empty Taiwanese freighter sits around waiting for some cargo.
The clouds are taking their time burning off over the city.
And so we set out with 8 people, including a contingent of 21 year old kids.
Boss-lady making sure her photography equipment is up to snuff.
Our trusty pilot!
And wife, aka Galley Slave.
Nice thing about the open water - you can just kinda pick a direction and go.
There are a zillion places to sit on this boat.
Or Stand.
And lots of hi-tech equipment too. Well, that little propeller thing isn't that high tech, but kinda techy.
The boat is bigger than it looks
My foot. I meant this is a marker photo, but I actually like the colours on this shot :)
ker-splash!
When your boat has another boat in it, you're in the big leagues.
Lots of other people out today, nobody even pretending to use the sails.
Sweet! Food.
Bainbrige Island
Gotta be a richy-rich to live here.

Alison had to jump in the agua. I'm guessing it was chilly.
Full functioning kitchen and everything. Wow.
Gotta make the owner work. We unfurled the sails for a while, but that was a waste of time, so we put 'em away again after a while.
And the cruise ships all head out. They all follow each other and go the same route. And are nearly half empty.

And the last one.
Working our way back to the city.
The marina was actually one of the most gorgeous sights of the day ...
All done. Off to dinner engagement!
