  Arriving in Kennebunkport

2008-07-23

As we drove along the highway towards Maine, we started reading up about towns on the coast. There were a few candidates for interesting places, right in the middle of which was Kennebunkport, which we figured would make a good "base" for seeing whatever we wanted to see on the lower Maine coast.

Arriving in town at about 6pm or so, we discovered that B&Bs don't tend to be all that full on a Tuesday evening, despite it being the middle of the high season. On the weekend, we might have been screwed, but as it was, we had an easy time finding ourselves a charming B&B in a great location.

The only other problem we would have? Finding something NOT romantic. Every single B&B we walked into would immediately show us all their most romantic rooms with queen beds and charming settings. We scored big time when the B&B we ended up in had a small family room, where Nicole got the room for parents with the big bed and I got the small tiny bed for the kids. It was really great.

All B&Bs up here these days have WiFI, which is, of course, critical.

We got lucky and found a great B&B in a great location near the ocean in the southwest of Kennebunkport (not to be confused with the "slums" of Kennebunk).
The place was really nice, well kept on the inside, and the breakfasts provided by the proprietor were really delicious.
We dropped our stuff off and went for a stroll into town to look for some dinner, including famed New England food.
You could call this a "port town", if by "port" you mean "place where ludicrously rich people park their yachts".
We had some great dinner at a place called Allison's. I had the New England clam chowder, which was probably the best clam chowder I've ever had. Oddly enough, both of us don't really like lobster, and never partook.
I have no idea why we took this photo. Or where for that matter.
This is the main bridge connecting Kennebunk and Kennebunkport. The only other way through town requires a multiple-mile detour, so traffic here tends to be quite awful.
Cheesy panorama of the river area north of the bridge connecting the two towns.
The weather started turning against us as soon as we got into town. Clouds, cool heavy winds, and eventually rain followed quickly.
Fortunately, there were some wicked thunderstorms in that bad weather, so I was thrilled.
We still managed to walk around for a few hours before heading back to the hotel for some reading and relaxing (We're old you see).
Don't you even DARE not waiting for pedestrians, and even some people thinking of becoming pedestrians at some point in the distant future. The cops will jump out of nowhere and write you a hefty ticket.
The next morning, after our lovely breakfast, we decided to walk around the town and explore things a little more.
This is no longer an affordable town.
But there's lots of shopping for those who can't afford to live here. At least you can say you -bought- something in Kennebunkport!
There are tonnes of restaurants here.
Don't let this calm water fool you. The weather is dying to get crappy on us!
Ducks!!!! Alright!
