  Beijing's Fragrant Hills

2010-11-07

So, the name "Fragrant Hills" makes me think of nice rolling hills and large park full of trees and ponds where you can wander and enjoy the autumn scenery. It turns out the park would better be called "Fragrant Single Big-Ass Hill". It's actually just a small mountain you climb up over the span of 2km.

The weather was cold and chilly, but as you walk up the mountain, you start to sweat and get really hot, which makes it all the more appropriate that there are howling cold winds up top. So, between freezing and dodging hordes waiting to take the chairlift down, you have just enough time to snap a few photos before your hands turn to ice and fall off.

You have to run the small shop guantlet to get to the park, which inevitably means you'll stop and have lunch before getting into the park.
But you finally get to the gates after a while.
Woo! Slogans (warning against smoking).
This little mini lady was helping people find their way inside the park.
The autumn is getting a bit late, but there were still plenty of beautiful colours to see.
The park is only 10 RMB to get into, but then it takes another 50 to get up the mountain if you don't want to walk.
Fortunately, I wanted to walk up, so saved the extra cash.
This cute little girl was really digging on her hot dog.
Need some help finding your way around?
Mom took the hot dog away. Not cool, dude, not cool.
Ponds and the like all require dozens of photo ops.
Some people were in a hurry to get up the hill.
This kid, on the other hand, was in no hurry to do anything at all.
First views of the city. The visibility was fantastic.
Quite the crush getting up the mountain, but it was still pretty easy to maek good progress.
Plenty of fun poses and silly scenes all the way up.
Half up way, there is a small store with drinks and a place to rest.
And entirely inappropriate seeming signs.
Still more gorgeous views of the city.
Gotta keep going though.
There's a big cloud leaving a huge shadow over part of the city.
Some people started getting tired as they got closer to the top and needed help.
They recommend frequent resting.
ZOMGZ! Finally at the top!
Most important two things ? toilets and how to get back down again!
You can hang little red streamers on the trees here with your name and wishes
Queuing up for the cable car ride down.
Lots of dudes trying to get you down to the backside of the mountain to one of their transportation vans.
Everybody else, however, is too busy just taking photos of themselves.
Unbelievably nice scenery though looking west.
In case you were wondering where all the factories that make Beijing all smoggy are: there.
The wind was really insane at this point. Some of the souvenir stands were in danger of blowing over.
I found a nice girl to take my photo.
This looks like a Christmas tree to me, for some reason.
This guy was doing his best to be all super cool.
The walk down was much easier!! Great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
