| Bicycling around Kennebunkport and environs | |

2008-07-24
We wanted to do something a little more active today, so we rented a couple of bicycles, and decided to spend as much of the day as possible riding around checking things out. The rental part was easy (although I think we got their last two bikes, so good luck for us), and then we just tooled around checking stuff out. We worked our way along the road to Cape Porpoise, and then ended up in Goose Rocks Beach. There were a decent number of other bicycles out on the road, but as the day wore on, the weather seemed to scare people away. Fortunately, we were too stupid to really care about the rain. We then worked our way back into town, and accidentally found a shortcut, and got back a bit quicker than we had hoped, so we started heading the other way along the coast, checking out Kennebunk Beach and beyond. |

This is where you rent bikes!!!
Working our way south Ocean Avenue, following the coast north and east.

The beaches are free, but the way they "get" you here is to charge for parking -everywhere-.

There are tonnes of hotels around here, all of which are pretty full, being the high season and all.
Forget about finding anything on the weekend without a reservation made weeks in advance.

This was a very cool little Anglican church that we had hoped to go see, but they were really crabby and didn't want us rabble gunking the place up. Jerks.
Nice living, if you can get it....
This it the American presidential compound here in Kennebunkport. It's very heavily guarded. It's also way smaller and closer to civilisation than you'd expect anything "Presidential" to be ....
Riding along the roads north and east.

Finally, we arrived at Goose Rock Beach. Which is a tiny beach town with maybe 20 buildings total.
The beach is pretty huge, but the weather was really not cooperating today for much in the way of outdoor activities.
This is not a church, but actually some sort of farm or something.
This is a hotel that looks like a white barn.
Go figure.
Working our way south and west now, we headed along the coastal beach road ($$ for cars, hahahahhahahah).
Lots of big expensive homes here, most of which are shuttered up.
There are always lot of people out surfing here, and it looks like a lot of fun. I hadn't even thought to do that!
We finally ended up a Franciscan monastery. The weird part of which is that it was started by Lithuanians, and has tonnes of stuff in Lithuanian.
It's a pretty modern monastery.
This is where you get your Pope stuff.

Okay, we'll return the bikes and head back to the B&B before the really awful rains set in. We had a nice dinner, found a good bar for some surprisingly good drinks, and called it a night.
