| Day trip of Kayaking | |
2006-02-26
One one morning when the tides were sufficiently late in the day, we decided to go for a little organised kayak trip to the cool island at the end of the beach. We each got our own sea kayak, and had a fun few hours paddling out, doing some snorkeling and relaxing on the beach, eating some fruit, and otherwise just enjoying the glorious weather. There was a pretty big group, and Chris, our hotel's owner, sent his son along for the ride too. |
Getting going at low tide in the morning, the ocean's a bit father away.
And we're off. You have to get a good jump over the first wave.
Here's our friend Ceri doing her impression of one of the Sand People.

Sean, the kid, just paired up with Peché, the local and guide.

The beach looks equally cool from out in the water.
The destination.
My view for most of the ride.
Paddling, paddling, paddling.
You wear a hat and a lot of sunscreen in this weather -- even the locals.
Arriving at the island, it's pretty quiet, clean, and very warm.

Sean was eager to try his hand at some fishing.
The island is mostly now home to Iguanas and birds.
There were a few other people visiting here too.
Ceri and Samantha!

The tides make for some really neat and weird wave effects around the edges of the island.
Trying to put together the fishing stuff.
This is the primary snorkeling reef.
Getting going with the snorkeling. The surf is a bit vigorous, and it takes some work to actually get out there.
Walking around with flippers is actually quite difficult.
This lady from Colorado was having better luck'n'me.
Lots of pelicans on this end of the beach as well.
Heading back, I managed to catch an awesome wave back into the beach and was able to take photos of everybody as they came in.
