  Dongyue Temple

2006-06-18

We decided to visit a local temple that's not so far away from home and school today. It's called the Dongyue temple, and was first build nearly 700 years ago during the Yuan Dynasty.

It's pretty massive, and used to be significantly larger. As a Taoist temple, it was used to offer sacrifices to various gods and ancestors. It still sees a lot of use during major events such as the Spring and Autumn festivals.

It has been hotter than butt here for the last few weeks here, and we had some good fun sweating around the temple. Fortunately, it was a nice calm day and not a lot of people were about.

There's always some construction going on around here. This city is pretty hopping.
Here is an original gate for the building they kept across the road. It doesn't do much else.
Girl!
Here's a map of the place if you're so inclined.
There are two of these guys, who are supposedly fierce generals. One is a tiger who snorts breath that "frightens enemies out of their wits"....
...while the other is a dragon who emits white light to destroy their enemies.
The temple is covered in these talismans all over the place, that people put up for various bits of luck, fortune, etc.
So, the main campus is divided into these various "Departments", to which you can make an offering depending on your particular concern.
These departments don't have many people asking for favours.
This one is quite popular, however. Why? It's the department for the accumulation of justifiable wealth.
This one, however, is MUCH less popular. It's the Jaundice Department.
This is the department of Opposing Obscene Acts. As evidenced by that hussie.
Cool roof!
This is the department for Wandering Ghosts.
Ooops. I wasn't supposed to take a photo of this. This is lord Binglinggong. He's in charge of three mountains.
This is a good luck dragon. Feed it some money and good things come or something like that.
Here's Samantha trying her hand at it.
Coolest tree of the day.
There are zillions of these things.
Okay, back to the departments.
This one is the department of Forest Ghosts and Spirits
Oooh, the department for Implementing 15 Kinds of Death (really!)
It's really pretty here, not made better by the huge smudge on our camera lens which made everything kinda blurry and flared.
Rawr! More scary departments.
This is the department for cute forest animals or something like that.
This is the punishment department. I love disemboweled guy.
You can never really forget that you're in the middle of Beijing here. It's a constant madhouse!
