  Forbidden City, Jingshan, and Wangfujing

2007-10-13

No trip to Beijing would be complete without a visit to the Forbidden City, now called the Palace Museum. This was my sixth visit to the place, and it only seems to get more stunningly dull with each and every new visit (and it started from "mildly uninteresting" on the first). Fortunately, it's so big, there's something new to see on each visit.

After that, we went to the Jingshan (景山, or coal mountain) hill just north of the Palace Museum, where I guess they used to have a lot of coal or something. A Ming emperor committed suicide there too. Finally, we walked our way to Wangfujing, where we saw the street with the crazy food stuff, and just walked around before heading out for dinner with some friends.

The palace museum is very museum-y.
And palatial.
And has some internet graffiti.
And lotsa tourists.
Next, we crossed the road into the Jingshan park. It was crazy cheap to get in, like 2 RMB or something. I thought I was doing something wrong.
What Chinese hill would be complete without some sort of pagoda temple shrine thing up top?
There are a zillion different signs all with slightly different ways of telling you not to smoke here.
The park is very well groomed.
And has lots of tall stairways to get to the top.
Introducing the pavilion thing up top.
At the pavilion thing up top.
The views of the forbidden city and the rest of Beijing are pretty cool, despite the haze.
What's that you say? Cheesy panorama time?
Well, axe and ye shall receive! This is a crappy panorama of the forbidden city as seen from the top of the Jingshan park.
The hordes never let up!
This is looking north.
Smile!
This is looking towards Beihai park, to which I have still not been.
Working our way downhill.
You can put on a costume ....
and have your photo taken!
MmmMMm .. Chinese snacks!
We continued on our way towards Wangfujing, enjoying the improving weather.
Wangfujing has this huge cathedral, which always seems kinda closed.
And then we arrived at gross food street, where all the scorpions, larvae, testicles, and starfish are just arriving for the evening meal.
Yuck!
