Getting Lost on the West siiii-iiiide.

2010-09-22

Three day holiday to celebrate mid-autumn festival, so like any other normal person, I decide to go on a 20km walk through the west part of Beijing. Didn't really intend to walk that far, but got to see lots of cool stuff.

I worked my way from Wukesong north and east up to 北京理工大学, then down to 紫竹院公园, back up to 北理大, and then all the over to Xizhimen. By the time I got there, my feet were shattered and I pretty much hobbled the last km. Wearing extremely flimsy shoes (more or less as effective as wearing none) was a bad idea. Whoops.

The west end of Beijing feels a bit less "built up" than the east, so there are lots of parks and green areas.
It's really quite pleasant down at Wukesong station.
On a nice, clear day like today, you can actually see the hills surrounding Beijing. Here, 20+ km closer to them from where I live, they look even bigger.
National holidays let you see something you otherwise NEVER see in Beijing:
.... light traffic.
The old CCTV tower.
And a little pagoda tower to the right. How did I not notice then when I WALKED RIGHT PAST IT?
Cool wagon wheel thingie or whatever. I can't believe people actually go fishing here!
I tried walking down there, but it was blistering in the sun. Scrambled up the bank and headed for the shade quickly.
Alright, weird signs on the local farmer's market.
Blue sky!
Walked past some nice flowers.
Holy crap, there's a bee on that one!
Funny how much scenery in Beijing is like this: Beautiful stone bridge, completely mired in wires and cables and other goonk.
If you're clever, you can still get a shot.
Um, that just looks awful. That water would not best be described as "clean".
It's a little swimming club, it seems.
That big blue sign right NEXT to the swimmers basically says: "Don't go swimming in the water. It's gross".
Wow, who knew we had this many canals here in Beijing?
I call this the "Car Wash District". A single street of 500m or so had like 10 of them.
This "dust brush" guy.
Inside the Purple Bamboo Garden Park.
HORDES here today. National holiday, great weather. Wow.
"Mommy, why is the foreign man taking a picture?"
Nice little lake, you can rent boats and scoot around.
Car boat.
"Hello? Hello? I can't hear you! I'm out to sea!"
This city does occasionally provide some shockingly beautiful stuff.
Ah yes, the machine gun car boat.
Part of the park is completely covered in lotus plants. You can wander around on paths there.
Strike a pose!
