| Great Wall Beach Party 2009 (长城入海口山海关老龙头沙滩派对) | |

So, the advertising has it that Shanhaiguan (山海关)is a mere three hour bus ride away from Beijiing, and that after the quick little trip you'll be in party central on the beach. The reality of the matter is that it's closer to 5 hours to get there, and highly likely that your bus driver won't exactly know where he is going and get a little lost. Throw in nearly fifty 20-22 year old students on summer internships drinking heavily, and you have a very loud and interesting ride out to the sea. The party itself is a closed off area where the Great Wall does indeed meet the sea, and is quite well-organised. You're not allowed to bring in any of your own drinks or booze (gotta buy their expensive-er stuff), but hot dogs, hamburgers, and really strong drinks make up for any disappointment there. Despite a reasonably strong police presence, the party was a microcosm of youthful excess. Sex and drugs at every turn of the head, and nutty young'uns all over the place. However, with such awesome music (the DJs were really fantastic) playing non-stop for 12 hours, it was a huge blast and unbelievably fun. The bus ride home was deathly quiet. Maybe 2-3 conscious people. My sleep pattern took a good couple of days to recover. Highly recommended, even for old folks. |

Waiting at the Worker's Stadium for the bus ride out.
The guy on the right is wearing a Kukuxumusu t-shirt from Spain. Those are rare, unusual, and totally awesome.
Since Beijing has been roasting for some time now, people didn't think to bring much in the way of clothing. It was actually a bit chillier at the sea.
"I am totally a pimp, yes"
Can you spot the lady-boy?
Man, I -love- 'fros. They are totally awesome.
It is very important to wear extremely high heels at the beach.
Nope, not a lot of Chinese kids here. Maybe 20%.
But plenty of French kids.
More Frenchies.
The burned out hull of the CCTV tower that caught fire at Spring Festival isn't looking so good.
Hey, there's a huge amusement park with roller coasters and crap here in the 'jing!!
The first rest stop. Copious purchasing of beer and potato chips.
Note to 21 year old kids: When you're barely half way into a loooong bus ride, drinking multiple cans of beer is not a good idea.

I think Marin want's to kill me. Or eat me. I can't tell if that's angry or hungry.
Me with Idriss's hat. And cool sunglasses, of course.
There were all these fish farms along the way. I never realised they'd just be in the middle of fields. I had always assumed they'd be near huge lakes or something.

Arrive-ed and milling about aimlessly.
This huge army of buses would wait here until well into the morning. The drivers basically just got to sit around and sleep.
It's a real beach full of Chinese people.
It's cool, because you have modern China (big-looking shipyard and grain elevator) to the north, and ancient China (Great Wall) to the south.
Pony rides!
Honestly, the beaches were much cleaner than I thought they'd be. Almost on par with something I'd see in Italy.
And there we have the wall, folks. It's great.
And hordes of people having a good day in the sand.

Me taking a photo of Arnaud taking a photo of us.
Haha, this black girl was a HUGE hit with the locals. They all wanted to have a photo taken with her. She appears to be quite used to it.
Once the lights went, it got a bit harder to photograph stuff with my crappy point-and-shoot and no tripod.
I.e.... If you look hard and squint a lot, there's a girl in a bikini there.
Gorgeous night with the moon and everything. It started to pour, which freaked everybody out and then ... stopped after like 2 minutes.
Okay, without a tripod, really hard to get a good stable photo in the poor light !! This is probably the best ....

A brief summary of the music: nnnts nnnts nnnts nnnts nnnts nnnts nnnts. So glorious.

Some excitement on the ride back home. This is on the 4th Ring Road in Beijing. Of course, it's a Jinbei car .....
