| Hanging in Costa da Caparica and Lisboa | |
2006-03-18
The weather was promised to be quite lousy for our time in Lisbon. Thunderstorms, rain showers, and otherwise a miserable time. Fortunately, they were mostly wrong, and Saturday was actually quite a pleasant day. The plan was to hang out on the beach in Costa de Caparica for a few hours, wandering around, and then drive into the city to meet Pedro and Paula to attend ... a motorcycle show! w0000t! It was time for the annual Lisbon Motorcycle show at the convention centre, and we hadn't done anything seriously motorcycle geeky in some time. They also took us to a place that makes these pastillas for which Lisbon and Portugal are apparently famous. They're super yummy, and I fear the locals are a little sick of them, as they only can ever eat one. At the end of the day, we went and grabbed a late dinner, and slept like the dead again. |
Our hotel was pretty nice and right on the beach. However, in the off season, they're desperate to get people into the rooms, so they get veery cheap.
This town appears to be going through a building boom.
Traditional Portuguese fishing boats.
The beach is huge, and stretches for miles in either direction.
They put these breakwaters in every few hundred metres to help avoid erosion. They're kinda ugly, but probably work quite well.

Airplane!
Because of all the stormy weather, the tide was quite frothy and angered.
All that grouchy tide means this is one of the best places to surf in Portugal.
And fish, evidently.
Funny how six months ago, we never would have paid these kids a second glance.
This guy was having an awesome run.
The waves are so fast here, you really just have to get on and hope for the best!

Saturdays appear to just be a great time for families to hang out at the beach and relax.
There are all manner of beach houses along the way as you walk, in varying states of (dis)repair.
I do call this the oddest thing I saw on the beach that day.

There's a giant statue of our Spanish friend Jésus as you drive towards the bridge to take you over the bay to Lisboa proper.
Traffic is so colossally bad that you get to spend about 45 minutes here.
You can see it from nearly anywhere in the city. Spoooky.
We ended up down in the part of town where there was an Expo fair a few years back, and it's now a convention centre / upscale part of town.
Me with Pedro and Paula.
Us with Paula. They decided to leave their cute kids with family for the day.
Weird naked girl art or something.
Pedro and Paula are shopping for new bikes, and were having a blast checking out all the new models.
I absolutely fell in love with this Ural side car. These are the coolest things evar.
I simply must have one.

Samantha was much more enamoured of the Vespa scooters.
