| Hanging out on Chiemsee | |

2005-06-23
One of our favourite places in Germany is Chiemsee, a rather touristy spot where all the locals (from Munich mostly) come for weekend getaways. It's always just really nice here, and there's a tonne to do and see on the lake. This year we decided to go see the large palace on Herrinssel, the large island on the lake (the whole lake is maybe 18km (12mi) across ...). You take a ferry to get there, and it's pretty affordable. |
Hanging out waiting for the ferry to leave.
While these photos make Prien and Chiemsee look beautiful
(it is), but they do NOT communicate how unbearably hot it was
out that day.
In this part of germany, you're not too far from the Alps, and
can see them on most nice clear days.
We passed another one of the ferries that just tools around the
islands and various large towns on the lake during the day.
Dorky tourist photo!
Getting off the boat, you have a 1.5km (~1mi) walk to the actual castle,
which is a lovely stroll through the woods and fields.
You end up at Herrninselschoß, which was built by King Ludwig II of
Bavaria as a "fan-boy" replica of the Palais in Versailles.
Evidently, Ludwig was a huge fan of Louis XIV and wanted to build
something equally grand. Except he ran out of money.
The history is very ... mmmm ... ice cream.
Mmm ... flowers.
You can see the lake from the gardens.
The gardens here are outrageously elabourate, and stunning.
The fountains are also pretty pimpin'.
The cool thing remains to grab the boobs of the female statues.
That's so hot.
Samantha could go on for hours about the historical significance
of this fountain and the various pieces that make it up. It's
just big to me.

GIRL!
This is the single biggest hornet I have ever seen in my
life. It was seriously like 3cm (1 1/4in) long.
They don't let you take photos inside the castle, but the
tour we took was awesome. The poor girl was doing her first
tour in English, and basically forgot everything. The comedy
far outweighed the lack of instruction (which woulda been boring
anyhoo).
After the main castle, we wandered around the island for a while,
making sure to stop for some tea & cake, a German institution
(well, it's actually called Kaffee und Kuchen, but close enough).
After a few more hours of wandering, we hopped back on the ferry
and went back to Prien.
Cool choo-choo train!
