  Laxman Jhula, Rishikesh, India

2008-09-19

Well, with all the exciting things that happened yesterday in Ram Jhula, I thought I'd head somewhere much tamer today, and walked the few hundred metres to the Laxman Jhula area of town. The big difference? Instead of a lot of statues of Rama, they're all of his BFF Laxman (okay, okay they're brothers).

Also, since the road to Rishikesh is perched quite high up on the mountainside here, you have to do a bit of hiking down some stairs to get back to the Ganges.

There are a lot more locals here than in Ram Jhula, mostly because there are a couple of major temples here that they all come to see. All critical stops on the ever-popular "northern temple loop", as it were.

Laxman Jhula kinda looks like there rest of Rishikesh, with a tonne of auto-rickshaws, bad roads, and cows.
Given the severe food problems I was suddenly finding myself having here in Rishikesh, I decided that all of these restaurants here on the strip were probably off limits.
There is plenty in the way of accommodations here Rishikesh, most of it dirt cheap. If you're paying more than 5$ a night, then many of the tourists will probably give you aghast looks.
This street reminds me of Monteverde in Costa Rica for some reason.
You have to go down this side road to get down to the MIGHTY GANGA and Laxman Jhula proper.
This is one of the other high-end hotels in town, at about 20-25$ a night. None of them have intarwebs, but there are a zillion internet cafes, so it's not too bad.
Can't make a trip to India fit into your schedule? Then here's the next best thing: a video of the MIGHTY GANGA!!!!
We're quite a bit above the river here.
Of course, there's a huge temple complex next door. It's one of the two big ones here in LJ.
Laxman Jhula as seen from up top, a bit south of the bridge still.
Next, you go down this alley to the stairs to the bottom.
There are beggars and stoners all over the place here. Instead of just saying "Money money money" here, they all just say "Hari Om", figuring all the yoga tourists will feel more spiritual about the whole thing.
At the bottom, still going towards the bridge itself...
A little ashram place where you can stay pretty cheap (maybe 2$ a night)
Popcorn. No way I'm brave enough to try this.
These kids are digging on this amusement park ride thing.
This cow is absolutely monstrous.
First look at the actual bridge here, and the other key temple in LJ, on the left.
Alright, it's the MIGHTY GANGA!!!!!
The monkeys here are like dogs everywhere else — more pests than anything else.
This is German / Swiss cafe that serves the same stuff as the 8 other German / Swiss cafes in town. However, they're the only food that I consider even halfway safe to eat here (note: i was being unusually careful here given the increasing gastric distress I was suffering through).
I stopped for a coffee ... not bad views.
The monkeys hang out on the bridge waiting to ambush pilgrims and steal their bags or stuff they're holding.
The big temple.
This is increasingly a big outdoor activity centre, so there's lots of white water rafting down the GREAT GANGA!
Monkey city!
Since there are no real roads connecting the two sides of the Ganga (the closest route is 16km, or about 40 minutes in typical Indian traffic), people just take motorcycles across the bridges.
Makes for harrowing crossings.
Looking upriver.
Even cows gotta cross the bridge sometimes ...
There's a little cafe down there. We considered stopping there, but it was house-fly city, so we skipped.
I love the painted rocks down there.
Basically, the deal with this temple is this: you walk your way up to the top, one level at a time. You ring these big bells they've got sitting around each level. It's quite the cacophony, but huge with the locals.
There's another restaurant here in this hotel, but the location is way the heck out of the way.
More bathing in ... THE MIGHTY GANGA!!!
Cool Ganges whirlpools.
"Boooooring".
Laxman Jhula is another shopping area, this time with more stuff tailored towards the tourists (of whom at least two thirds are Israelis, oddly enough — this place is a huge hang-out for post-military service kids).
It's definitely a lot quieter here.
So, uh ... does anybody know what exactly sleemy music really is??
These little rivers and waterfall things would be cute it it weren't for the fetid stench of piles of rubbish.
This is the Little Buddha cafe, which had a pretty mean Lemon-mint drink (called a Lemon Nana). They were, of course, a German/ Swiss cafe.
Look at all those bells waiting to be rung.
I finished my day at this little cafe place, and then worked my way back to High Bank. Check Laxman Jhula off the list.
