First time I've been back in Milan since 2001 or so. Went on a marathon wander fest, looking for China-town and drinking entirely too much coffee. I wasn't sure what to expect, since I haven't been here in in a really long time, but just wanted to walk around get a feel for the city. Overall, I really enjoyed myself. It might be a bit dull and a working town, but it felt clean and quite pleasant. |
I took the morning train from Varese into town. It costs 5€ and takes about an hour to get there.
The weather has been gorgeous for my trip so far, so I really enjoyed wandering around. The temperatures have been absolutely perfect!
First stop — a cafe for espresso and a small sandwich.
I walked down some street with like the Gucci head offices or something. So many motorcycles and scooters in this city, I was getting serious two-wheeled envy!

For some reason, I kept getting lost and going the wrong way, but eventually found my way to the Piazza del Duomo ....
... where there's a duomo ....
... and a zillion Chinese people getting married. They would have all been Japanese a decade ago.
Rats with wings, everywhere.
The locals were hugely amused by the weddings and were taking pictures left and right.

Inside the Duomo is really cool, actually Lots of paintings, stained glass, and other cool stuff to see.

Inside the giant gallery next to the cathedral.
That's the Castello San Angelo in the distance. It's pretty creepy, so I decided to skip it this time.
Instead I just started wandering down random roads, trying to cute a nice wide path through the city. This street was killer narrow with streetcars roaring down frequently.
There are always very cool courtyards and other areas into which you can look.

The Fiat cinquecento (500) is a great old car, with a 500cc motor. There's a new version, with a 1000cc engine, but it costs an arm and a leg.

After a week of bread and pasta and bread, I was dying for rice and a normal Chinese dish. Cravings satisfied!
I was enjoying all the gorgeous motorcycles all day, but found myself most impressed by the nice and simple naked street bikes. Getting old ....

The gay train terminal? Either way, beautiful building. Caught my train back to Varese and my legs threatened to secede from my body.
