  Outdoor Activities in Costa Rica

2006-01-20

We did a couple of interesting trips this time in Costa Rica, including a trip to see the Póas volcano, which you see about 10-20% of the time.

The next trip we did was in Monteverde, where we went to the SkyWalk park, where you can walk across suspension bridges and see all sorts of neat animals such as monkeys, etc.

There is actually a canopy tour through the forest at that park, which we did later in the month, but it's hard to take a camera on that one, as you're scooting along these little wires at 60kph (40mph).

Our first trip was up the Póas volcano, on a nice sunny summer day.
The coffee plantations along the way are quite nice to stop at.
And here we are at the volcano. AWESOME view.
Here's the viewing balcony.
And here's a picture of what we'd see if it were clear out.
Here we are wandering through Monteverde on the way up to the SkyWalk place. We decided it would be a good idea to walk 6km straight uphill to the place.
Dowtown here is pretty nice, actually.
These places may LOOK close, but given road conditions, they take 1-3 hours to get there.
Here's the other big canopy tour operator.
Walking up the road towards the SkyWalk place.
We were a good sized group of people, including Samantha's friend Patricia and some very nice Germans we met from Hamburg.
Holy crap! paved roads! This lasted about 1km.
The countryside here is ¡muy excelente!
Stopping for a quick photo stop. That's Ursela.
Manfred was having some battery problems with his camera.
We finally arrived at the park and payed the very reasonable entrace fee and began walking across the bridges.
In the howling winds, the first bridge was actually quite spooky.
You're quite high up at various points, and it's best not to look down.
Everything looks nice and sturdy tho'.
Ursela was trying to decide if she was nauseous after the first swinging bridge or not.
Haha. She was just joking. Samantha got it.
Bridge number 2.
Oooh, trees.
You spend a lot of time hiking on these very cool trails, going from bridge to bridge.
Samantha and Patricia
It's a photo duel! Haha!
Trundling along.
Here is what happens when it rains for three months. Looking up.
And looking down. The mudslides in this country are horrific.
One of the neat things about this walk is that the bridges take you through the top part of the canopy, which is cool, since in a cloud forest, that's where all the interesting stuff is.
Oooh, what's everybody looking at?
Holy moly! monkeys!
This dude is just crawling around everywhere.
Holy Nutsacks, Batman! That's a money shot!
Continuing along.
Some of the bridges are huge, exceeding 300m. 100m is more normal, however.
Patricia!
Coming up to the next one.
Pretty flowers!
Out on the longest bridge of the day.
Yaaawwwwwwnnn!!!!!!
Sweeeet! More monkeys -- a much bigger group this time.
It's like a giant Jungle Gym out here.
Some people couldn't stop taking photos of the monkeys. They're addicting, apparently.
At the end, waiting for our ride back in the hummingbird gardens.
Bzzzz ... I'm a hummingbird!
Did you know that hummingbirds regularly stop? Cool!
Well, not for long.
