Ritan Park and Yabaolu, 4 years later

2010-03-27

When I first moved to Beijing in 2006, I lived in Yabaolu, the old Soviet / Russian neighbourhood. I would walk around there and the nearby Ritan park and take pictures. I got a new camera recently, so I went back to check it out. What a difference 4 years make!

The little yoga school is still there in the old mini-golf centre.
And the teachers still do weird stuff to the students.
But it remains a magical place to do yoga.
This is the slaughter pavilion, where they used to slaughter animals. Now they just slaughter ear-drums as there are always ladies singing Peking Opera there.
I'm having fun playing with the new camera.
The old torture park remains there, although it's been improved somewhat. On such a nice day, everybody was out and about playing around.
Best leathers and boots on — excercising on the swingy leg machines.
There's always ping pong, of course
And the old climbing wall is still there, after a couple of deaths over the four years.
This is apparently an awesome date place.
"Dad, I'm sick of posing".
I have no idea what the big fuss was bout today. Cards? Chess?
These guys were cracking me up with their kites. So serious about it !!
This kid was having a hard time understanding the whole kite thing.
"Work it girls!"
Still not getting it.
That China World Tower or whatever was most certainly not there 4 years ago.
Half of those buildings probably weren't there before.
Still a romantic hang-out place.
This park is where kites come to die.
There are at least 4 kites in this photo.
I wonder what he's thinking about.
"aw, baby, you know I love you...."
"sigh. shoulda becomea shaolin monk"
The Stone Boat is now under new ownership.
"I bet you say that to all the girls!"
rawr!
Gotta take a good picture with grandma.
"I'm going this way mom!"
"Whatever"
This was an empty lot last time. Now another tacky Chinese / Russian shopping market.
All new!
But still the unbelievably trashy russian ladies walking around. Wow.
My old building in the background.
Housing remains a huge craze here.
This street is completely different. There are still lots of shops and stuff, but every single one of them is different from before.
An interesting visit back to my old hood. I liked it.
