| Roman Ruins at Segóbriga and back to Madrid | |
2006-03-28
The plan for today was to get back to Madrid. But we were in no hurries whatsoever, so along the way, we decided to stop off at Segóbriga, an ancient Roman city near the town of Saelices. It's a pretty cool archeological site, and very much worth the side trip. The weather continued to be awesome and we had a blast strolling around. Afterwards, we headed back to Madrid, found a hotel near the airport, and just spent some more time downtown doing some shopping and otherwise hanging out. We were sad our trip was over -- Spain is an awesome place, and very much worthy of much more exploration. |
One of the cool things about Segóbriga is that there is a museum with stuff right from the dig there. It's cool and has some neat stuff to see.
These are some actual tools and things from the homes.
This is what the place would look like if it weren't a 2000 year old ruin.
More helpful pictures.
You actually have to walk like a kilometre from the parking lot to the site. Fortunately, it was a really nice day out.
This is a necropolis
This sign helpfully points you towards a fountain of drinking water.
Here's a pretty impressively preserved artifcat.
Or maybe this is it, and that was just something new.
That's the dig on the hill out there.
This is the Roman theatre. It's in pretty good shape.
There was a group of poor Spanish kids being bored to death by a lady explaining all about the place.

I suppose if you used your imagination, you could picture her as a performer thousands of years ago.
But I think those performers were trying to entertain, not educate.

Water channel.

This is part of the baths for this town.
Pretty cool, actually.

This is part of the ancient forum. Not doing so wel any more, but cool.
These look like good frolicking hills. *Frolick!* *Frolick!*.
Hey, there are some Spanish kids already frolicking here. How dare they??!?!?!?!?
Looking down on the ruins.
There's an old wrecked farmhouse up here.
As always, the Christians came along and decided to build some of their own stuff on the ancient Roman site.
This is apparently a monastery.
These are the ruins of a couple of temples, one to a god, and the other to the cult of the emporer.

Next, the ancient amphitheatre.

We were sad our trip was over, but satisfied that we saw a lot of cool stuff. Definitely have to come back and spend much more time here. Sweeet.
