| Sámara, the Beach Town | |

After leaving Monteverde, we ended up in the beach town of Samara, which is a bit less well known on the Nicoya coast than some of the other beaches such as Flamingo, Coco, or Tamarindo, but has the advantage of not sucking nearly as much as any of those places. It also has the advantage of having perfect learning waves, not being too big, but occasionally getting just large enough to make it interesting. We ended up staying at the hotel run by the guy who owns the local surfing shop there too. Room rates were pretty reasonable, the place was very new, and the company and socialising were hard to beat. The primary purposes of our trip to Samara were to practice our Spanish and to surf -- a lot. We accomplished both goals, and surfed nearly every day. Awesome. |

The Tico Adventure Lodge is a pretty new place with awesome rooms and really friendly owners.
The Treetop apartment they have is pretty pimpin', but hard to get a reservation for.
I was fiddling with the camera, and ended up taking some photos of our balcony. We spent a lot of time just hanging out here waiting for the tide to come in.
The hotel is very cleverly built around existing tree, so the grounds still contain huge numbers of very big, old trees.
There are plenty of areas to hang and relax, including a sweet pool.

This is Mrs. Iguana. She hid in our neighbour's roof most of the time, but would come out every once in a while.
If she saw you, however, she would run away at full speed.
If you look hard, you can see her staring out of the roof here.
I really like our balcony, aparently.
This is Mr. Squirrel, one of the local cool brown ones. He spent a lot of time hanging out in the trees in front of us, and avoiding the cute kittens that regularly came by to try and eat him.

Here's the hotel from the front on a very cool day with some high thin cirrus clouds.
Walking around town, the hotel is located on the main street connecting Sámara and Playa Carillo down the road.
This is the torture church -- some sort of weird evangelical kinda thing where they would have singing and prostrating sessions a few nights a week. The lady who sang literally sounded like she was being tortured.
Sadly, there is a garbage problem in town that the locals have been griping about for some time. With local issues handled by a distant, corrupt, and repeatedly jailed mayor in the town up the road, it's hard to get things done right here ....
This is the best food in town. Good Italian cooking by a lady who's never been to Italy nor ever learned to cook Italian food. She calls it local Tico food. Either way, it's affordable and excerrent.

Strolling down the main road next to the beach. It's hotter than butt here in late February / Early March.
Cool clouds today !!
This hotel was just a collection of sticks in November, and is looking pretty good now. They've got a pool and all now.
The beach is never far away here.
This is the cool fruit stand in town where they make yummy batidos and sell good fruit at tico prices.
This is the cheap grocery store.
This the police station and postal office.
Next to the Police station is the local restaurant (called a soda) by the name of the "Sheriff". Best tico food, and definitely the best ceviche.
And cheap.
This is the local cancha (football pitch).
Look hard and you'll spot the real estate agents. All those crazy gringos and Europeans are coming and buying all the land. The locals would be pissed off if they weren't getting so darned rich off the deals!!

Strolling down the main road into town.
This is the biggest church in town, and is kinda cute.
It's next to the bank, which is set up, ready to go, and has staff hired and being paid. There's just no fibre optic data link via which to run the bank.
And here's the nice air conditioned Internet café. It's like blood.
This is the main intersection in town where the road from Nicoya meets up with the road to Carillo. It's also where the bus stop is.
This soda has the most awesome rotisserie chicken evar.
This is where you go to buy booze. They also sell munchies for when the booze is all gone.
Anybody know what this fruit is?
The statues in this country all have a tendency for quite graphically accurate genetalia.
Here's the new sign at the hotel, after the owner spent a few days working on it. Kinda cool.
