After a pretty good night's sleep in Cancale, we planned a day of sight seeing. Our first stop was Saint Malo, a town about which we knew little, but read in a German guide that it was worth seeing. It turns out that this town is both extremely cool AND extremely important: It was the port from which Jacques Cartier left France when leaving to discover La Nouvelle France (aka Canada aka Soviet Canuckistan). It's got a very old medieval fortress feel to it, and stuff pertaining to Mr. Cartier all over the place. |
The town also has these extremely cool little fortresses all over the bay which end up surrounded by water during high tide. You have to be a bit careful when wandering out to visit them.
Huge beaches. It wasn't the warmest of days for sunbathing though.
We're guessing these trees help protect the wall, but we're not 100% certain.
There actually were families and groups of people making a picnic of it.
We then wandered towards the walled old town, which is very cool looking.
This is basically the only way in to and out of the town.
Everything is still this shale grey colour.
It's a very popular tourist place and there are hordes of people strolling around here.
This is the cathedral in town.
The inside was spectacular -- an interesting mix of church and maritime town.

Translation: "Here knelt Jacques Cartier to receive the blessing of the bishop of Saint Malo on his departure to discover Canada, the 10th of May, 1534.
More Jacques Cartier/Holy stuff.
More Jacques Cartier. Literally. Eeeeek!
The organ in this place. It's quite large.
These are government buildings. They always get the good ones.
We then wandered to the outside of the town towards the huge walls that surround the whole place.
You can go wandering all around outside.
I bet that would be a lot of fun in warmer and less windy weather.
Translation: NO DAMN DOGS (even with a leash).
You get the occasional view back into the city.
Schoolkids on a day-trip. In Canada we got to to go to the Zoo. *yawn*.
We're not sure who this bad-ass is.
"BUDDIES!"
Cool lighthouse.
Swanky living!
Apparently the tide is so severe here, your moored boats just go ... uh ... belly up when it goes out. Weird!
These are the ferries to Jersey, in the Channel Islands.
Back in town, we wandered around some more. Most of the shops are, sadly, tacky tourist stuff.
Fortunately, there's lots of food!!!!
We grabbed a quick sandwich before heading back to the car.
Mmm ... people. Them's good eatin'.
This car looks like it's seen cleaner days.
