  Strawberry Music Festival 2010

2010-05-01

Last year the Strawberry music festival came to town after the Midi music festival was cancelled. Organised by the folks at Modern Sky, it was a really pleasant weekend, with small crowds, good indie music, and plenty of food and booze.

This years, however, was entirely different. The success of last year's festival meant that more people wanted to see this years. So, on opening day, whereas last year you just bought your ticket and walked in, this year we were greeted by multi-hour queues. With swelteringly hot 33C+ weather, and no real options for beverages while you waited, it was a mess.

Inside wasn't much better — they were simply unprepared for crowds of this size. somewhere between five and ten thousand people showed up for a festival that was expecting perhaps one or two. They ran out of food, drinks, and everything else. Even to get some water turned into an hourlong ordeal, and by the end of the day, they ran out of that too.

I remembered my BUCKET OF MOJITO fondly from last year, and was hoping to have another this year. So, they got the bucket, the sugar, the limes, the mint, and the ice, poured in half a tub's worth of rum and ... that's it. They ran out of sprite.

So, on a killer-hot day with no water, I drank about 6 solid shots of rum. Ouch.

Still, the music was good, and it's a fun way to spend the day. I'll give it another chance next year before writing it off as dead.

We arrived at 1 or so, and even though we had some friends "hold a spot" in the line for us, it was still 4 before we got in !! Here we have Iris and Jo.
And lots of other people whose names I should know :(
There was one place that had a few drinks and you could stand in line to try to get whatever they had left. There was also a lady selling colourful kites.
Back to the line. Not much to do but wait.
It moved at an abysmally slow rate. Their entrance gates could only handle a few people at a time.
Alex and Shuo.
Smart people anticipated the queues and brought sunbrellas.
And very pink hot pants.
Badr is just … um … unusual.
Jo agrees.
I don't know what this is about.
SEXY MAN!
Still not really moving.
Finally in. This is the first stage we saw. I called it the "Sad lonely stage".
Just one guy with a guitar and about 10 people in front it, mostly photogs for various periodicals.
Well, and this one fangirl.
who very appropriately was wearing strawberry stockings.
Maria and her friend (whose name I've never learned, sadly).
We were parched. Drink drink drink!
Well, and a bit of eating too.
My main man Idriss!
Plenty of food at the beginning. Until they ran out of everything.
We finally got up and continued on our way.
This the main Strawberry stage area.
Good crowds.
Not sure if it's hotter in the tent or outside …
Ridiculous number of people walking around with fancy, expensive cameras *cough* *cough* …
People selling little trinkets here and there …
… and … um … these two.
People watching in China is awesome. I will never tire of it.
"I'm tired. I think I'll rest".
This is AV Okubu, a band from Wuhan (武汉)… I really liked their vibes a lot. Favourite band of the day.
The AV Okubu guys putting on a good show.
I think these little devil horns (or sometimes kitty ears) the girls here wear are adorable. I'm getting cheesy as I get older.
Still rockin' the house!
Idriss is too cool for his own good.
This girl just freaked me out. The clothes, the hat …
… the sitting down on the ground for who knows what …
The shoe choices also amaze me. For walking around on the grass? Really?
Some other, heavier band. I just wandered between stages listening to the various groups for a while.
The strawberries were fewer and more expensive than last year, sadly, so I didn't partake.
Late spring is great for trees and flowers.
Nice makeup.
I'm supposed to know who these people are. I've met / been introduced to them before.
But I'm senile and old.
As the day got longer and everybody got more tired and thirsty, we just ended up hanging out on the grass a lot. Relaxing.
Idriss and Maria tried studying.
The lighting from the nearby stages made for some interesting effects
Finally, Alex, Shuo and I hopped on a bus to rush to the Grand Hyatt, where we had a dinner date with his mom.
But they were really late too, so we just hung around outside for a while.
