| The Beaches in and Around Sámara | |

One of the nice things about hanging out for extended periods of time in a beach town is that there are lots of beaches to explore, and Sámara is no exception. The beach for the one town itself is a good 4-5km (2.5-3mi) long, and there are beaches right on either side of it too. We spent a good amount of time walking up and down the Sámara beach, and also made a trip one night to Playa Buena Vista, where they have a turtle sanctuary to protect giant sea turtle eggs from poachers, run entirely by volunteers. |
You have to stroll along the beach at reasonably early times in the day, or else the heat gets unbearable.
There are a lot of huge birds out here, some of which are hawks, but most of which are very large and kinda cool buzzards.
At high tide, the beach is maybe 10-15m wide. At low tide, maybe 100m
There are lots of palm trees available to hide from the heat, which is very much appreciated.
The island down the beach is the most distinctive feature.
The sand is very cool here, and a lot of fun to walk on. Just watch out at 3pm, when it's hotter than hell!
Oooh, footprints!
The beach is filled with these weird little sand turds, which are apparently pushed up by burrowing crabs of various sorts. People looking for bait use these to know where to get the crabs from the ground.
They're still kinda weird looking.
There was this filming for some very weird yoga video going on. Straaaange.
I call it bouncy ball yoga.
These cabins are like 25$ a night, have two beds, and are RIGHT on the beach. Pretty neat.
Just watch out for the bugs. Skeeters are a problem here.
The rock at the end of the beach contains all sorts of wildlife, including crabs, fishies, and various birds.
The main thing at the end of the beach, however, is the huge collection of pelicans.
Walking over the rocks becomes a bit more fun, but is otherwise a cool way to spend a few hours.
The pelícanos get kinda edgy as you walk towardes them, and start moving away as quickly as possible.
This bird was hopping around looking for food. MMmMmMmm .. fishies.
Eeek! Scary person, run away!
The rock on the little hill has a pretty neat texture to it, actually.
As you wander, huge flocks of pelicans fly overhead.
There are lots of these very cool crabs running around the rocks. If you're
careful, you can see one before it scurries away under the rocks!
These are neat, although I have no idea what they are.
There are these cool snail things that, as the tide goes out, leave these little trails in the sand.
This was the first time, however, we saw one of these freaky green wormie thingies.
Traffic Jam!
The pelicans spend most of their time hunting fish. The dives they make are spectacular!
Ker-splash!
One of the guys helping with the yoga video was making pictures in the sand.
He also pushed up his shorts so it looks like he's wearing diapers.
These guys shoulda waited for high tide to push their boat out ... !!
One other day, as we were strolling around, we came across a family of howler monkeys. Cool!
While looking a little annoyed that I was hanging around taking photos, they remained pretty calm about the whole thing.
Ooh, cute monkey babies!
We finally made our way out to Playa Buena Vista, about a 30 minute walk from Sámara. It's a much better surfing beach, with waay scarier waves, but is less suitable for hanging out and sunning in the afternoon (no shade at all).
The waves are so violent that there's a constant mist here.
We arrived just in time for sunset, which we'd been told was most excerrent.
And they were correct.
The beach is quite long as well, and you can walk quite a ways down it.
This is actually where the turtle sanctuary is. It's run entirely by volunteers and funded mostly by donations.
There were still a bunch of dudes out surfing this beach. Kra-zee!
Time for the sun to go Tubby Bye-Bye!
The sand is more black and volcanic feeling on this beach, and gets over everything!
The volunteers just camp out at the sanctuary and take shifts.
Oooh, feet!
Almost gonnnne!
Aaaah! Tilted earth!
And she's goooone!
Here's where they keep the turtle eggs. They remember which eggs were with which lot and when they were laid, etc.
We didn't get lucky and thus were unable to see any eggs. ¡que lastima!
