I picked up my sister and the rental car at JFK, and then we started driving, with the goal of just getting out of the city and into Massachusetts by sundown. We drove along some pleasant roads through nice western Connecticut countryside, before ending up in southwestern Massachusetts, in the town of Great Barrington. To be perfectly honest, neither of us had heard of the Berkshires or any of these parts of MA before coming here, and weren't quite sure what the hype was about. Our New England book raved about Great Barrington and it's "50 B&Bs within 10 miles of the town". We drove around for a good hour looking for places, finding about 3, before finally giving up and opting for the much more affordable, if somewhat soulless, Day's Inn. The next day, we stumbled across a hiking trail, which we meandered along for a while, and then walked around Stockbridge, before making the decision to blast our way to Kennebunkport, way up in Maine (note: "way up in" here means about a 3 hour drive away. New England isn't very big). |

Our crap rental car and our mediocre hotel. Nicole was dead tired and collapsed in our room the previous night at about 9pm. I managed to head out and get some good food first and then had a good nap.
We decided to get some breakfast and walk around the town the next morning.

Despite every single website, pamphlet, and local that talks about the Berkshires and Great Barrington telling how stunningly full of charm and awesomeness these places are, they're really quite calm and small places, usually with a lot of Italian restaurants.
Being back east with a little more history, some of the churches are a bit older here.
New England always just has a nice "feel" about it.

The main "shopping strip" in this town has about 5 stores in it, two of which make most of their money selling Lattes.

Alright!!! Chinese Restaurant (and Lounge) coming soon!!!
We hopped in the car with the plan of heading north more into the Berkshires.
There's a lot of choice here ....
We then saw a little hiking trail area, so we stopped and figured we'd go for a walk. It was a really nice day for it too.
We really had no idea where the trail was going, we it was nice to check out.

The signs were surprisingly unhelpful, and the only map we saw didn't tell us where we were ... d'oh!
Okay, we then stopped in Stockbridge for some lunch a few hours later. Apparently I'm hungry.
This town has lots of old looking buildings, and is known for ... uh ... being a place where some semi-famous artists hung out 50-80 years ago. Really.
Uuh, Nicole is hungry too.

This is the Red Lion Inn. It's a very large looking old wooden hotel smack-dab in the middle of town.
Main Street isn't very big here, but it's "very charming", which is critical.

We had a very good lunch before deciding to do a few hours on the Interstate. We'd end up in ME.
