The day of Temples! (well, and Houhai too)

2007-10-21

As Zoltan's time in Beijing wound down, we decided to go and do some walking up in the northeast 2nd ring road, which takes you to some of the cooler temples, including the Lama Temple (yonghegong), and the newly re-opened Confucian Temple / Academy, which been closed as long as I've been in Beijing.

The good weather continued to hold, so we visited the two temples, and then worked our way through the hutongs inside the second ring road before ending up for dinner in Houhai, and then walking around near the Drum and Bell Towers.

I've never seen this inside the Lama temple before. Some sort of fountain thing into which you can throw some cash.
Who'da thunk people would actually throw paper money ?? Who'da thunk the ink would run so easily!
The Confucian temple complex is like 100% new, with everything being freshly renovated and painted.
Intro to the place haha!
The gardening in this place is quite well done, actually.
Confucius, or Kongzi (孔子), as he's known the locals.
大成门!
Them's some mean looking polearms there.
Zoltan was ready for battle!
The old trees and buildings give this place a nice feel.
I'm having slanty problems today it seems.
I think you can buy these little wooden things and hang them here for good luck.
Chinglish is so much fun.
It's the official Confucian parking lot!
This is the second part of the complex, which is more of an ancient academy or university or some such thing.
Still gotta have a Kongzi though.
We then continued walking all the way to Houhai and environs.
The drum and bell tower are pretty cool, even at night.
Houhai, on the other hand, is a tacky cacophonous disaster of light, noise, and expensive booze.
But it's still fun to hang out.
