| The final day of the Ganpati Festival. Wow. | |

Today, being the last the day of the Ganesh festival, means that everybody loads their Ganpati statue back onto the back of a truck or an ox-pulled cart, and re-does the parade thing, this time with all the men and women together, and now heading towards the nearest ocean or large river (Mumbai is on the sea, so that works out well). You parade the 2-3 miles to the ocean official "dunking place", which takes a good 3-4 hours, and then you queue up there with a ticket, awaiting your turn to chuck your Ganesh statue into the ocean. You'll usually wait another 2-3 hours to dunk, which people don't seem to mind, because they bring a tonne of food and drink with them. Then, you throw the Ganesh into the ocean, wish him well, and walk home, arriving probably at about 3-4am. The irony is that this ends up causing no small amount of environmental damage. The statues are all made of plaster with (poisonous) glue and covered in (equally poisonous) paints. When a few thousand of these are dumped into the ocean, these (poisonous) elements all leak out and immediately kill everything within 10 miles. The next day, all the beaches and riverbanks around the country are covered in dead fish. The federal government has been trying to remedy this for a while, but like anything else in India .... um ... no. Following the parades around is awesome. It's the loudest thing I have ever experienced in my life, and might even be more awesome than the Spring Festival fireworks in Beijing. |
