The final day of the Ganpati Festival. Wow.

2008-09-15

Today, being the last the day of the Ganesh festival, means that everybody loads their Ganpati statue back onto the back of a truck or an ox-pulled cart, and re-does the parade thing, this time with all the men and women together, and now heading towards the nearest ocean or large river (Mumbai is on the sea, so that works out well).

You parade the 2-3 miles to the ocean official "dunking place", which takes a good 3-4 hours, and then you queue up there with a ticket, awaiting your turn to chuck your Ganesh statue into the ocean. You'll usually wait another 2-3 hours to dunk, which people don't seem to mind, because they bring a tonne of food and drink with them.

Then, you throw the Ganesh into the ocean, wish him well, and walk home, arriving probably at about 3-4am.

The irony is that this ends up causing no small amount of environmental damage. The statues are all made of plaster with (poisonous) glue and covered in (equally poisonous) paints. When a few thousand of these are dumped into the ocean, these (poisonous) elements all leak out and immediately kill everything within 10 miles. The next day, all the beaches and riverbanks around the country are covered in dead fish.

The federal government has been trying to remedy this for a while, but like anything else in India .... um ... no.

Following the parades around is awesome. It's the loudest thing I have ever experienced in my life, and might even be more awesome than the Spring Festival fireworks in Beijing.

Dawn of the last day of the Ganesh festival
Yawn. What do I care?
The calm before the storm.
This group decided to head out early and beat the crowds. Today, everybody would be throwing around plenty of purple/pink powder. For good luck or something. Even they don't know any more ...
This guy really wanted me to come and dance with them. They love dancing.
This is one of the earlier processions to send-off their Ganesh (some people cleverly try to get a jump on the rush, y'see). I like how they have a rope to keep everybody away from all the traffic.
Walking around King's Circle later that evening, it was a huge mess of merging Ganesh parades, bands, fireworks, and people milling around.
As the sun set, things quickly got crazy.
Some of these trucks are so huge they have their own "Generator Trucks" Following behind just to power the displays.
Tonnes of fireworks going off, which was a bit scary given the huge bombings in Delhi the day before.
There was some half-hearted attempt by the gov't to ban fireworks for today, but ... good luck with that.
Our Ganesh is bigger than your Ganesh!
It's like a carnival here, with everybody and their family out and about, eating cotton candy, bananas, and ice cream.
The (backside of) Congress Party stand. Politicians here in India will resist no opportunity whatsoever to spread the good word to people.
They basically just shut down the main north-south route here and redirected some of the traffic onto a single lane of it. Good luck getting anywhere today.
The bands are still awesome, and this group was trying to set off some major fireworks in the middle of the only major thoroughfare left open in the city.
The bands were out and about, and these people were having a tough time getting their huge scary fireworks set off.
Traffic still trying to get past!
I then went and met Kamlesh and his family. Here we're all crammed onto a Takat for a group photo! Holy crap, I'm white!
I wish the sound on this one had come out better. Right behind me is a huge stand sponsored by the Indian Congress party, right next to the main Ganesh parade route to the sea here in Matunga. The speakers behind me were pretty much non-stop blasting serious techno and Bollywood music, with the occasional announcement. See if you can count how many times they say "Sonia Gandhi".
We ended up hanging out at the Congress stand for a while to meet up with some other people.
More parade zany-ness at the Congress Party Stand.
It's a madhoose out here!!!
Every group has to be more crazy than the last!
After dinner with my friends, I worked my way back to my place, taking the opportunity to photograph some more of the festivities on the way home.
All the locals are watching.
Some guy, who didn't speak a word of English, grabbed me and wanted to have a cup of tea with me. Go figure!
Here I passed under a Mumbai fly-over where some more parades were going past. It's funny how a garbage truck tries to squeeze through in the middle.
Gotta have a good band! I met one person who is convinced the only way the bands can survive that long is by taking a lot of speed. Who knows?
It was raining a lot out, but nobody cared.
This group was giving out free sweets and bananas, and everybody was clamouring for them big time.
What an insane mess!!
I love how this place has a rock concert-like feel about it.
Make way for the Ganpati!
Don't forget to dance.
And the streets shall run red with blood ... -red pigmented powder, that is.
Huge generator truck!
The streets get pretty dirty.
More evening-time craziness. I was in bed looong before things even began to calm down. (Yoga at 7am the next day).
This guy was thrilled that I was taking his picture!! Hahaha!!! Apparently you give these guys money, like you would a stripper. Some guy ran up to me, gave me 20 Rs, and made me give them to the guys in the band.
This was hands down one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. Wow.
