The first few months in Beijing

2006-10-05

Well, Samantha and I have been in Beijing for a few months, and we have seen a number of interesting things and met a number of interesting people. Here we have a bunch of photos of some of the various people, places, and things that we've seen, including a video of some people eating scorpions. Ew.

There are some cute kitties in Yabaolu. This one looked like it could use a little more love and attention.
Samantha went out for dinner with some classmates for sushi. It was good, apparently.
Buddhist monks at Starbucks. Even monks gotta get a double tall mochalattafrappaccino.
Mariane and Silvia waiting for a table at Hot Pot Paradise. Yumm.
We paid some money to learn how to play Mahjong. It's exactly like Gin Rummy, but with pieces instead of cards.
And then we had a party where I nearly busted Harold's camera. Whoops.
Julia, the school owner, Urban, the Swedish helper, and Silvia, Mariane, and Tine.
Tine and Silvia looking like somebody has to die!!
This is right before Julia asked me how to translate some complicated Chinese poem. At this point in time, I knew how to say "How are your mom and dad?".
Harold says "STOP".
Partying at Brown's, which is a mildly alarming expat bar.
Tine's gotta look cool with the Yankees cap.
Harold and Sweden.
Samantha takes her beer seriously.
Marc takes being retarded seriously.
Girls.
Uuuuuh.
Me trying to ask a question about airports. it did not go well.
Holy craaap, I have the hugest forehead in the history of mankind.
Eating scorpions. They look nasty.
This is a video of Tine, Peter, John, and some other Canadian guy (who's name might also be Peter) eating scorpions. It looks pretty awful.
Nasty
This is Wangfujing, the shopping area in the heart of the city.
This is one of the food streets with lots of skewers and weird animal parts you can eat.
I like to pretend this is Beijing's gay district.
I sweat a lot.
John and I sweat a lot.
Peter and his language partner friend.
Mariane, Tine, and Barbara
This bar is called "Bed". You sit on beds and drink things.
or just roll up your sleeves.
or talk on the phone.
Being happy is mandatory, however.
marc + long hair == not a good combo.
Group dinner!
The girl on the left is some brit named Nicole whom we just started talking to at a bar one night. She was kinda friendly, so we invited her to dinner with the gang.
