  Through Normandie and into Bretagne

2005-07-04

Before leaving Normandie, we wandered around Crotoy for a little while. The town, despite having a slightly depressed feel about it, was actually extremely charming and we enjoyed wandering along the beach.

We then continued our way through France towards Bretagne. The weather looked threatening most of the way, but never quite got that bad. We even managed to stop in a town called Honfleur (near Le Havre) and have some excellent mussels and crayfish salad.

By the time we arrived in Cancale, which overlooks the bay containing our ultimate destination in this part of the world, Le Mont Saint Michel, the weather had cleared up and we were ready for some serious sightseeing over the next few days.

We woke up to a very grey and heavy day in Crotoy, and were eager to go wandering along the beach.
We asked the guy at the hotel in Crotoy what was up with all the aviation paraphernalia we kept seeing.
He explained that the town was the first military airbase in France -- with a beach runway open most of the year. Only by 1920 or so was it finally replaced by land-based places and eventually closed.
The tide was out -- waaaay out.
... and the folks at the lifeguard station looked like they didn't have all that much to do.
The life of a lifeguard oscillates between being stupidly busy and stunningly dull.
There were a lot of hotel-like buildings in town, none of which looked all that open.
Translation: "You will die".
These trees give you an idea of the weather here most of the year. We were feeling a lot of it.
Cute park with see-saw.
What are these guys up to in this wind?
And why are there helipads every 400m on the beach promenade?
WTF ?? These guys are going to go kite-boarding in this wind. Holy guacamole.
These guys really WERE kite-boarding. That's brave
This guy was "testing the wind". Hey dude: It's windier than HELL out.
We next ended up in the port to look for a bathroom and otherwise just check it out.
We stopped here for an espresso.
This town basically survives on fishing.
Next, as we drove past Le Havre, we ended up on this insanely tall bridge.
Next stop: LUNCH. In Honfleur. Due to a menu mixup, our one 12" crayfish salad to share ended up being 4 12$ crayfish salads, and the whole lunch was like 170$ or so. But it was entirely worth it.
We didn't have a whole tonne of time to see everything in the town, but it looked really cool.
As we got to the Brittany Coast near Le Mont Saint Michel, we ended up spending 2-3 hours finding a hotel. This one was awesome, but 300$ a night. Ouch.
This is the town of Cancale, which overlooks the bay here, and is quite beautiful in its own way.
We were to camp out here for a few days and just enjoy the food and scenery.
This town is also still largely a fishing town for the locals (the rest run hotels).
This kitty was patrolling his turf and didn't feel to keen on some free petting.
This grey colour was predominant in this part of France.
Whoa, I got tall.
This dude was trying REALLY hard to look pimpin' with his giant Boom Box.
Hly Moly! That boat is just hanging from the dock!
After dinner, on our way back to the car. Woohooo! We ate waaay too much on this trip.
