  Vintage Racing in Spa, Belgium

2005-07-03

As the EuroPrez meeting drew to a close, we hopped back in the car and drove the ~40km to Francorchamps (near Spa), where they have a huge race track that plays host to a Formula 1 race every year.

Today, it was playing host to a vintage motorcycle event, with peple racing various old motorcycles of all degrees of age and size. We hung out for a few hours just watching them go around, eating Belgian French Fries, and just enjoying the biker atmosphere.

We even ran into a few of the Swedes from the EuroPrez meet. Cool.

After the races, we hopped in the car and drove out to Normandie, trying to find a nice town to spend the night. We had some bad luck, but finally found a really nice place in the town of Crotoy.

Of course, now that everybody is leaving, the weather was awesome !!
It's hard to get good photos of the bikes zipping past with a small point-and-click camera ...
The track is absolutely huge and unbelievably loud. We were sad that
Oh, almost caught two in one frame.
Hey, there are the Swedes, Matz, Clæs, and Lennart.
mmmMMmmmm .. french fries.
Here goes the next wave of bikers. The engine sizes get bigger with each new group.
Being really old bikes, there's little protection and these guys are huddled over big time. Some of them are pretty big guys too ....
A lot of the bikes can simply no longer hold up to the abuse of a race track, either, and lose parts.
There was even a dude on an old BMW !!!
We next wandered under the track to the Paddock area.
For a low-key event like this, they totally let you wander around pit lane. Awesome.
This is where all the bikes would gather to start racing.
I next stood right next to the track trying to get photos of bikes roaring past. My ears were pretty pissed off at me.
I missed more often than not.
Okay, maybe I'll have better luck trying to get them from the back ....
... nope ...
Lotta serious old bikes here ...
I can't believe that this guy is sleeping with all that noise. Yikes!
Next wave of bike sheading out.
How do you start a bike when there's no starter (too heavy)??
Why, with the bike wheel spinner starter!
While there were a lot of amateurs, there were a number of serious teams here too ...
This was the most serious guy we saw all day -- older guy in his 50s/60s on a BMW R90S. Serious bike, seriously aggressive driving.
He even managed to bitch out the starter spinner guy.
There were actually a number or R90Ses out there ...
The highlight of the day? Belgian French Fries. Look like butt, taste like teh awesome!!!
Here are the sidecars lining to race. These things are totally cool.
Lotta guys with their women as the sidecar luggage.
Girl!!!
NNNnnnyyeaaarrrrroooooo.....
Some people came in the coolest little get-ups for the weekend event.
Other people were more hard-core.
A lot of the bikes were for sale.
Somebody showed up on one of the new BMW R1200STs ... nice.
We drove for a few hours and after almost running out of gas ( and having to beg a local to let us use his French Bank Card), we ended up in Crotoy, where we found a surprisingly cool and small hotel.
The weather was wretched, but it only added to the atmosphere of the place in the Bay of Dieppe.
It totally stormed all night long.
